San Juan Puerto Rico Highlights

El Yunque National Forest - A 45-minute drive from San Juan, this 28,000-acre tropical forest is one of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders. Set in the Luquillo Mountains and named for anvilshaped El Yunque peak, the park contains 240 species of tropical trees, flowers and wildlife, including ferns, orchids, parrots and tiny tree frogs called coqui. Cool and often rainy, the park’s verdant forest contains a dozen hiking trails and a lookout tower. its highest peak is 3,532-foot-high El Toro. A popular restaurant at the entrance to the park is Las Vegas where both Puerto Rican and American cuisine is served.

Local Attractions In San Juan Puerto Rico

The cruise ships dock right at the doorstep of Old San Juan, a seven-block area packed with historical and cultural sights which include Gothic churches, restored colonial buildings, townhouses with inner courtyards and wrought-iron balconies, museums, art galleries, bou-tiques, plazas, fountains and gardens. An information center is conve-niently located beside Pier 1 inside (1) La Casita (the little house) and is an ideal starting point for a self-guided walking tour of these historic streets and fortifications. Refreshments can be enjoyed along the way at various restaurants and sidewalk cafes, or from street vendors who seli bottled water and sof t drinks. Piraguas (fruit-flavored snow cones) and helados (coconut and pineapple ices) are popular with the locals.

Getting Around Puerto Rico

San Juan’s main cruise port is located adjacent to the walled city; its secondary cruise pier (Frontier Pier) is two miles east of the main port. in between the airport and the cruise piers lie the hotel-lined beaches of Isla Verde, Ocean Beach and Condado, where the majority of passen-gers stay if spending extra time in San Juan before or after their cruise. Two hotels located right in Old San Juan are the El Convento (a former convent) and the new Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel on the harbor front. Tourist taxis are painted white and they offer fixed rates (per car) to and from tourist zones. The fare from the airport to Isla Verde is $8, to Condado is $12, and to the cruise piers in Old San Juan is $16. The fare from Isla Verde to the cruise piers is $16 and from Condado is $10. The fare from Frontier Pier to Old San Juan is about $10.

San Juan, a busy base port for Caribbean cruises, is also one of the best-preserved ports of colonial Spain. The walled city of Old San Juan, the oldest Spanish settlement under American sovereignty, is a World Heritage Site. Its cobblestone streets are paved with ballast from Spanish galleons and the impenetrable citadel of El Morro was önce a symbol of Spanish domination in the Caribbean. in contrast to the historic feel of Old San Juan is the nearby Condado area, where modern high-rise hotels line the beaches and a sizzling night life can be enjoyed in the night clubs and casinos.
