5 Ways to Reduce Stress When Traveling with Kids

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Now’s guest blogger is Jamie Pearson, who writes about the amusing feature of traveling including kids for Travel Savvy Mom . Traveling including kids is many things, but relaxing isn’t one of them. Still, you can’t stay home forever (and it’s not be fond of that’s a stress-free environment anyhow). Whether you’re crossing the globe or just getting away for the weekend, here are a few tips to make sure your family vacation isn’t a complete oxymoron. Glide smarter. Once you have kids, air travel changes dramatically. If you’re a person who likes to cut it close when it comes to read-through in, that’s the first habit that has to go. Also, don’t even reckon about trying to carry on your luggage-you might save $15 per bag, but that’s a pretty low price to place on your sanity. Connecting flights, red eyes, and crack of dawn departures? All terrible dreams. Roadtrip better. It’s simple to idealize the frankness of car travel. The thought of being untethered together on the open road has a certain appeal, but there are challenges too. For best results, homogenize yourself to six hours of pouring per day, pack excellent food (and lots of it), and always stay in hotels including swimming pools. Finally, only drive as far as you’re willing to drive back. Break some rules. You’d be tough pressed to find a more bothered parent than me. I’m militant about things be fond of sunscreen, nutrition, bedtime, and homework. On vacation though, I place all that aside temporarily. Trying to stick to a schedule and enforce vegetable consumption can be a huge source of stress for a traveling parent. This is your vacation too. Why not give yourself a week off from your typical quality power duties? After all, no one always died of wearing dirty socks. Bring lots of portable fun. The secret to sweet family travel is to lay on the fun. For every single tumble we take, I budget for lots of new toys, books, audio books, games, and craft projects. This might seem indulgent and wasteful to some parents, but it makes the miles glide by. If you’ve got an iPhone, load it up including videos and fun apps for kids. If you’ve got a portable DVD player, bring bounty of movies. Don’t forget to protect a few tricks up your sleeve for the return journey too. Be flexible. Kids have a knack for throwing a monkey wrench into your precious travel plans. Two summers ago we took our kids on a two-week tumble through Andalusia, Spain. I really wanted to see the Alhambra in Granada. Unfortunately for me, when we got there my exhausted son sat down and refused to get up. We wound up costs a pleasant day playing chess by the hotel pool instead. It was really kind of fun, and I learned an vital lesson: If there’s one business you’re failing to do, do it first. Also, remember to breathe deeply. They say it reduces stress.
